PJ’s Story
PJ was for many years a deep cleaning specialist working at holiday camps, churches and prisons. Working from floor to ceiling and enjoying playing with high reach equipment like motorised scissor lifts and cherry pickers.
He had been positively influenced by his father towards DIY and decorating, helping to maintain properties of family members.
In his mid-30s he had an accident on the stairs at home, twisting himself and slipping two discs at the base of his spine. After that he could only manage small jobs that involved no heavy work, in security and plastic moulding.

Not a true likeness
His knees were degrading and 3 years later he was was promised a cortisone injection that he waited 2 years for. However deterioration continued and he had to stop work entirely due to continuous pain.
From then on he was more or less housebound. He was promised a knee replacement that he has waited over 5 years for. He’s under 60.
Staying at home caused isolation and a loss of hope.
In the middle of 2024 he came to the Shed as a result of receiving a cancer diagnosis two months or so earlier. Lymphoma. He came shortly after the Thursday cancer morning had started (Shedding Light Into Cancer).
He described how he felt. “useless, down and depressed, low esteem, not liking himself (overweight for not being able to exercise). Suicide had even crossed his mind. He quickly added, “But not now!”.
He felt scared coming on the first day. He was concerned that it would be a meeting where it was all about cancer and how to handle it.
But it was nothing like he thought.
“Everyone was friendly, it was fun just talking and having some banter, and I sensed immediately it was more like a family community. I found a sense of purpose, a place where I fitted in and could belong and contribute to.”
He’s a 4 a week man! Every weekday except one.
He enjoys painting and decorating and with the aid of a stool to rest against he has decorated our Shed cross corridor.
He is a changed man.

Thursday training workshop for Digital
4 Shedders (one from Whitby Town Shed) met to run through some of the introductory materials (videos) that Paul had collected. Ran through and used Derrick as a guinea p[ig! It was a very worthwhile morning. In the afternoon we covered 3D scanning and cameras.
