Not Just Filling Time but Filling with Purpose

This is a draft of a presentation/discussion by Graham and Paul to a small (??) gathering at Norton Medical Centre next week. Shedders comments welcomed.

Not Just Filling Time but Filling with Purpose

Raspberry Pi is a microcomputer and also the nickname of a Shedder

Fresh from his with playing a train sound at the press of a button, Raspberry Dave is embarking on a project with multiple choice buttons!

The computer code will be adapted to accommodate four sound recordings (5 minutes each) about Norton Shed’s origins and purpose and four sound recordings of Shedders experiences at the Shed.

These will be available at the Shed but also for promotion at other events. There will even be Braille labels on the buttons.

If nothing else, this stops Dave being bored and blowing raspberries.

Looking into inexpensive safety Tech

This is an “Explore a Need” Norton project.  Keeping a safety eye on everyone at the Shed and to realise the consequences on others present when Shedders just want to enjoy their time and are set in their ways (pause for breath) is a challenge. It is the same at home for families of those who are mainly housebound and living alone.

The Shed is going to take a look (well, more like a play) with Home Assist technologies. We start from base one and this is a project all can join in, not just techies!

Home-Assistant is an open source system that integrates readily available devises often used externally (like GPS) to possibly know where a person is in their own home (or a Shed).

Below is a link to a project called “Person”. No idea at present whether it will or will not help – but it is something to explore as homework and maybe have a test space for trials at the Shed.

Norton Men’s Shed Open Day

Well, 6 people came😒. Failure?        No.  Quite the opposite!

It was what we had hoped for because each of the conversations were quality gems. Caron, an RAF veteran (off to an annual reunion where she might talk about us!). Connor, an amazing special needs teacher a bit like Bear Grylls (though Connor disputes it). Several opportunities to discuss (including 3D printing). ?????? (forgotten name) who has autocycles and needs space to renovate one. Two men from the Bowls Club interested in 3D printing (one of whom has – would you believe it – an autocycle). Look it up.

Plus Dennis, Walter and Graham got on with some odd jobs. Assorted, not strange). A great, encouraging few hours meeting some people that seem to fit in or around the Shed and opportunities. Success.

This is a shout out from Norton Shed for any surplus to need smart devices that work with Alexa and/or Hey Google which Nortonians might have.

The Shed already works with digital technologies (we like 3D design and printing) but some Shedders would also like to launch a project to help those in our community who struggle because of mobility issues and are possibly housebound. Smart devices may be able to help them in their situation.

We also want to help those in need of assistance getting to grips with everyday life increasingly relying on coping online. So some small group learning and discovery!

We intend to create a smart Shed that can demonstrate to people what some of the technology can do to help, and for people to have a go (have a play) with. We’d welcome others who might want to help the learners. Friendly teachers!

So announce on Alexa and Hey Google “Have you any surplus smart/digital devices?”.      nortonmensshed@gmail.com or call 07763 656627

A Good News Story about Braille Greeting Cards
We now have Gordon amongst us on a Wednesday (usually) and he will be a key member of our digital inclusion design project, along with Wheelchair Steve.  This news item popped up this week and it’s the story of another overcomer.
