Electrifying

We’ve done a lot at Norton Shed to create what we think is a comfortable home from home for us. It has a very warm feel to it (the atmosphere) and we’ve needed no heating. However, we knew the weather would turn in November and we needed heaters that the existing circuits could not provide.

In September we set about creating new lighting, power socket and heater circuits. Not an easy job when the place was a working Men’s Shed. Moreover in late October we began to install dust extraction which needed the new sockets!

The work created a separate network of cabling to the that in place. The work reached the stage of switchover from the old fuse box and cabling to a new MCB protected consumer unit.

We switched over during last weekend and with some minor tweaking, it all worked and the heat was on! It was not easy working with no power and needing to use torches and mobile phone lights.

And now the circuits, consumer unit and the installation needed certifying by a professional electrical engineer.

This day after switch on the temperatures dropped and the morning saw frost and ice. You might say the work was done just in time.

Our thanks to Railway Dave for doing the major part of the work and all the planning. Almost all Shedders had small roles at various times but on the final weekend Scotty Dave and Graham worked through to early evening and the dark. It was a real team effort by the Shed.

We can now complete the dust extraction although the country seems to have run out of ductwork Y’s (splitters).  There must be few containers from China at sea!

Next up the Dust Extraction . . .
