Christmas is coming

The Tree of Shed Life  is being completed.

That’s the title given to the artwork (!?!) to be displayed in St. Mary’s, Norton. For the rest of the year we might rent it out as a dog kennel or a holiday home for hedgehogs!

There should be a  guide to displays and the text we have provided reads-

“Norton Men’s Shed is a place of wellbeing, particularly for mental health, that has its roots in 30 years of Sheds in Australia, 10 years in UK and 8 years in our sister Sheds in North Yorkshire. It treats loneliness and isolation through Shedders efforts by themselves for themselves and each other.”

Katy at Whitby Town Shed penned these Shed thoughts. They inspired some of the words on our tree decorations.

We have made a breakthrough

The Shed is now connected to the internet via a permanent connection through the wall into the football club. This opens the door to commination’s beyond our four walls and to engage with CAD design and YouTube videos.

Another breakthrough is that the floor in Anthony’s Man Cave is down and the display unit awaits assembly.

Scouts woodland hideaway

Another Christmas target request was for a pergola which could double as a stopping off point for Santa on his travels. We joined forces with Frank (a friend, like us, of the Scouts) to tackle it.

Frank put up the posts (plumb upright) and set out the shape and On Saturday morning Graham joined to add bolts to the structure and help to put joists some joists in place.

Anyone wanting to help please make contact with Graham.

So accurate was the work with a spirit level that Graham decided to record the evidence.

You will see Frank playing a supporting role to the level in this voideo clip.

Harrogate Woodworking Show is next weekend (11th, 12th)

Yes, that’s on it’s way. Last year (Nov 2022) Graham prepared a PowerPoint presentation for a presentation there, only to discover there was no projector available!

This “unused” presentation has been dusted off again but also extended with description of the Doing Places. Norton Doing Place is anticipated for early 2024. A forerunner is already developing in Whitby.

A Doing Place has the flavour (feel) of a Shed., It will be run mainly by those who attend, for instance. On the other hand there will not be lathes and table saws! Just a variety of things that people needing some time together and peer support can do. The choice is theirs.

Ambassadors benefits of Sheds

Radio Tees attended the Monday Shed

Yes, a woman – Izzy!   Huge fun time for all and a GREAT creative distraction.  It should go out in a later morning slot later this week.

It was broadcast on Tuesday 8th at 10.45 and here is a link to a recording of the Norton Shed Segment

Meanwhile Wheelchair Steve made Graham a Christmas present of three trees (not Tees).

Absolutely fabulous. From pallets. Decorated and with battery lights.

What to do with three trees? Glad it wasn’t 12 days of Christmas!

Offered one to Norton Medical Practice, one to Radio Tees and one to daughter-in-law at Crooksbarn Primary School for her classroom.

No from Medical Practice because of infection risks (understandable).  Yes from Radio Tees and delivering Thursday pm and not yet heard from the teacher (busy teaching!).    UPDATE   Yes from Crooksbarn  School and  a new yes from Norton Sports Charity!

This was a fabulous gift to the Shed that we are pleased to give away (sorry Steve but no insult to your craft!). In fact Steve is pleased with the idea of passing on so they are useful and get used. Would sending a kiss to the Social Prescribers at Norton Medical Practice risk infection do you think?  Sending not giving you understand.

In fact the Social Prescribers got a good press in the informal round of chatting with Izzy and Graham grumbled about then for disturbing his holiday two years ago! It all adds up to teamwork.

Submitted Charity Commission registration documents today

Charity Commission for England and Wales Public Meeting in York ...“The registration division Is currently experiencing exceptionally high volumes of work And we aim to be in touch with your nominated contact for the application within 40 working days (8 weeks).
Please do Not contact us (by phone Or email) to ask for an update Or to discuss the application.
Thank you for your patience.”

So could be a New Year result.

Next one up for this weekend is registration submission for Whitby Town Shed. There are aspects of Shed work that are less fun!

Caged Animals

Well Paul & Kevin with an escaped Graham with a camera.

The Scouts’ bandstand is reading for boarding (and take-off!)

Completed the decking beams and noggins.

And finally for this blog . . . .

One of Wheelchair Steve’s pallet Christmas Trees finds its way to a corner at the BBC Radio Tees suite. Graham learnt a lot about the teamwork involved in putting a show together overnight!

Complete with a greeting card from The Shed
