Into 2024

The turn of the year is traditionally a time for reflection.

Rob Shilson in Whitby Town Shed has penned his reflection on attending the Shed the first time 4 years ago and how it still works for him.

As I approach my fourth year at Whitby Town Shed I have been reflecting on why it was not just good…but sooo good.
I am once again reminded of my first day and what it took to become a card carrying Shedder!

1/ First Impression
I was initially overwhelmed by the vibrant, active, creative and fun atmosphere. Norm was making his wooden automaton models, Lance was discussing photography. Tony and Ray were woodworking. Ted was repairing something. The craft table was buzzing with Katie, Maeb and others creatively absorbed. Then there was a new ‘delicate’ man being introduced to woodwork by Graham. I also heard that there had recently been an outing to an art exhibition. Some vitality!
2/ Personal Validation
Graham and I had spoken previously and was therefore aware of my electrical engineering background. He pointed to a stack of LED light fittings and suggested that if I had nothing else planned I could upgrade the lighting. Work commenced and I very soon felt valued and a part of it all.
3 / Follow Through
I have a lot to thank Norm for (sadly he moved away). He introduced me to some of the other Shedders and at the end of the first session and suggested we go for  a coffee to continue chatting. A few days later he phoned me to see if I had enjoyed the day and if I was going next time. Graham also phoned for my feedback – we had quite a long chat!

Those three steps got me to where I am now. It has been a bit quieter at Whitby Shed recently but I feel  we have the potential to get back to where we were. Using the working title of Shed Plus (where the Plus includes The Doing Place and the associated Krampus arts  project) we can extend to new interests, extra curricular activities and of course to network with our other Sheds and the local community.

Onwards and Upwards

If any Norton Shedder would like to write about their first day of their early experiences it could make an interesting read for us

The practical arrangements for Norton Doing Place are being put into place
The intention is that a few of the Monday Shedders will visit the Friends Meeting House for a recce late morning on 15th January. The Monday Group will then use the new venue for the first time on 22nd.

We intend to be open for newcomers from 29th with the kettle on!

Rob Shilson’s piece above is a reminder that what Sheds do is not based on impressive organisation but on simple friendships made for which there is no formula. Moreover, everybody can have a role in it.
